Why it's important to read
Reading is a crucial part for language acquisition. It increases their vocabulary and understanding of the language. It can teach them about the culture or simply some fun stories and facts. When children are young, parents are encouraged to read to them. Once they start being able to read out aloud themselves, it's critical to develop this habit. It’s also a wonderful way to spend time with your children.
What the Nihao library offers
The library works as follows. Membership is £10 per academic year per student, all goes towards running and replenishing the library. Books are allowed to be borrowed for two school weeks. Maximum two books per week. This allows wide readership without too much undue stress on readers. There are bookworm award certificates every 16 books (bronze, silver, gold, platinum) completed (reset every academic year). If your child chooses to perform a book to their class as part of their award, they will also get a gift as encouragement.
How you can help your child (ren)?
At home, please read with them to the best of your ability. Ask them questions and make it quality time together. If Mandarin isn’t your mother tongue, choose books with CDs. Your child’s teacher can also help you choose the right level reading materials.
At Nihao, volunteer for guided reading slots. Sign up sheets for each class will go to for 30min lesson slots. Volunteer every other week, once a month, however often you would like to. You don't have to volunteer just with your own children's classes.
Get involved with the library committee and please give us feedback, to help out ad hoc or in any way you can offer. This service is possible due to the hard work of staff and parents who help and together we can keep improving it for the students.
